Ideas for Campground Cooking

Many people enjoy camping for the simple fact that it provides a means to escape the sometimes over whelming lifestyles they lead. Time to relax and enjoy the outdoors is easy to find while camping. But just because you live outside does not mean you can not enjoy good food. With a little planning, a head of a time enjoying good food cooked outdoors is possible.

Cooking over an open fire is definitely an option, but cooking on a camp stove is certainly easier and costs much less time to be comfortable with. Regulation of heat and obtaining a stable level platform for the pan to keep often difficult the most on a open campfire. Gas camp stoves are relatively cheap compare to the range in your kitchen and easy to cook on. For baking, a cast iron Dutch oven works very well and this way of cooking with a small campfire can work without much exercise. When planning meals a head of time take note of the cooking utensils together with other items needed and not just points will not be forgotten at home, but additional items will not be caught either. Such items may include forks, spoons, plastic plates and cups, spatula, tin opener, and food storage containers.

By planning meals in advance you know just how much food to bring together know how much cooler space will be needed. It is always a good idea to bring food that will not spoil especially in the warmer months of summer, items that include nuts, bread, cereal, peanut butter, potatoes and dried fruits. Fresh food to consider that are easily cooked outside on a portable grill include hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken kabobs, vegetables, beef, and fish. A few days before leaving to create your own liter ice using ice buckets will also save money. Screened tents placed over a picnic table provide the perfect hiding place for foot items, food preparation and eating.

Whether cooking on a campfire or grill foil packs are a great way to cook a variety a variety of meals. Plant containers can be made with sliced potatoes together with the onion and carrots for added flavor. Just smear butter on the foil, add vegetables, and tight folding. To fish in a foil pouch to smear a lighter coating of butter on the foil, season with salt and pepper. Olive oil can also be replaced with butter and adds a unique flavor to the fish. Do not forget the hot dog sticks for making a quick snack or roast marshmallows with. Another favorite of many children are fruit tarts that can be made with a Hobo pie irons.

Travel to Wyoming?

We would like to take our motorhome to Wyoming this Aug. I have heard that gas stations are few and far between, as are the campgrounds. Is there any particular section of the state that such as Cook county( i.e. southeast part) where we will not run into the problem of no fuel?

Wyoming is where you will not run out of gas. Most motorhomes have a 300 mile range. the state is 400 miles across. there is lots of towns that you will come to, just remenber that a good habit to get into is don’t let yourself go below 1/4 tank. You will be fine.

Campground!?! you have a house on wheels. Pull over next to a river or in the moutains and enjoy.

Camp Cooking Essential Gear Checklist

When preparing for your next family camping trip it is important to bring all of the tools that you’ll need to prepare basic meals while in the great outdoors. Getting all your gear ready for a long trip can be time consuming and stressful. To make your life easier we have prepared a list of cooking items that you should consider on your next camping trip.

Camping Stove/Grill

Make sure you have something to cook your food on before you travel. Some campgrounds don’t offer grills or offer grills don’t look sanitary so bringing your own can save you time and energy. A camp stove is great if you want to boil water or cook foods faster than putting them over the fire.

Cooking Fork

In my mind after the stove the camping fork is one of the most important cooking tools. Use these to roast marshmallows or cook hotdogs over the camp fire for a truly good time. I recommend getting a couple extra forks because you never know when someone is going to break, loss, or burn a marshmallow on them.

Can Opener

Canned goods are great for your camping trips because they let you bring a wider variety of foods. Now that you have your chili and vegetable packed up a ready to go you’ll need a way to open them once you get to your campsite. Don’t spend too much on one of these if you don’t already have one because they tend to rust if they get wet or aren’t stored in a dry place.

Utensils Cooking/Eating

Whether cooking or eating you’ll definitely need a good set of utensils. Stainless sets are great for outdoor use since they are extremely durable, easy to clean, and cheap. A spoon and spatula are the basics for cooking but a large fork comes in handy when moving hot pieces of meat.

5-Piece Aluminum Mess Kit

Cooking pasta, chili, or soups can be tough without a pot or fry pan. Aluminum mess kits come with everything you’ll need to cook a wide variety of meals in the outdoors. Get a set with a lid so you can boil water faster and keep pest out of your food while cooking.

Knife

A knife works great for cutting food and other items when out camping. You don’t necessarily need to bring a kitchen knife because you can get a larger pocket or outdoors knife. When looking for a knife a good one will have a non-porous handle and a 3-6 inch straight edge blade.

Percolator

If you have a coffee addict in your family you’ll want to make sure that you have one of these on hand. A percolator can be placed over a camp stove or the fire to boil water so you can make coffee to get the day started on the right foot.
