Fruit or Vegetables – What Should I Start With?

Fruit or Vegetables – what should I start with?

I initially started my baby on rice cereal, and then moved onto fruit. Firstly, I started with cooked apple before moving onto cooked pear. This was a mistake! Pear gave Olivia painful (and noisy) flatulence - so I gave that up pretty quickly until a later date. Many people will advise that starting on vegetables is better, as most fruits are naturally sweet. Their concern is that babies will grow to prefer the sweet taste of

fruit rather then the savory taste of vegetable. The suggestion is to start with the potato, and then to try pumpkin. Boil the potato after peeling, until it is soft, then puree with breast milk or formula. I actually used cooled, boiled water to mix with any of the vegetables. Another

method is to boil the potato unpeeled to keep more of the nutrients. After cooling it, peel off the skin and puree with breast milk or formula. Potatoes are a very versatile vegetable and are rich in vitamin C, minerals and fibre. Remember, do not add salt! Our babies’ taste buds are much more intense than ours, which means that food we think of as bland has much more flavour to them.

Pumpkin, with its smooth texture, especially the butternut variety, is naturally sweet and easy to digest for babies. Cook, then mash or puree. Keep some in the freezer for a later date – it is easy to freeze in ice-cube containers, to be used

later. This can then be mixed and matched with many different vegetable for a delicious, nutritious taste. From my experience, even though I started Oli with fruit for her first solid food, she loves all vegetables and fruit equally. Even the disliked brussell sprout!

Cooking BBQ Ribs in Rotisserie Oven: Tips on Showtime Rotisserie Grill

Have you ever made bbq ribs in rotisserie oven? It’s not impossible to cook scrumptious baby back or country style bbq ribs in a Showtime Rotisserie grill. I’ll tell you how to comfortably fit bbq ribs in rotisserie oven.  And, will add a good-tasting marinade for some great savoring ribs.

Before barbecuing the bbq ribs in rotisserie oven, one should parboil the ribs. Here’s an easy parboil mixture per ‘The Ultimate Rotisserie Cookbook’ by Diane Phillips:

  • 4 quarts of water
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, quartered
  • 3 dime-size pieces fresh ginger
  • 3 black peppercorns

In a 5-quart stockpot, mix together all the components.Put the ribs in the pot and bring the liquid to a boil.  Reduce the heat to medium-low and gently simmer for 15 minutes for baby back and 15 to 20 minutes for thicker ribs. Remove the pork from the liquid and pat dry.

Let’s prepare the marinade before I talk about how to put the bbq ribs in rotisserie oven.  It easily follows the parboil mixture.  One of my most preferred is the Pork Marinade by way of cooks.com.

Emphasize that this is after parboiling the ribs.

Pork Marinade:1 can (6 oz.) pineapple juice

  • 1/2 c. soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • About 3 1/2 lbs. pork spare ribs or pork loin

Combine all ingredients, except ribs, in a jar with a tight fitting lid. Shake it well and pour over ribs. Marinate in refrigerator, turning occasionally, for several hours or overnight before barbecuing. Drain ribs and set aside marinade. Bbq ribs in rotisserie oven and brush frequently with marinade, until ribs are done, about 20 to 30 minutes. Makes about 4 servings.

One of the ways to place bbq ribs in rotisserie oven is via the Ronco Rotisserie Round Rib Basket.

  1. To start with, you place the round rib basket on top of ribs that are laid down with the insides facing upwards.
  2. Wrap the ribs around the basket and hook them into place.
  3. Place the rib basket onto the spit rod and set it in the front two resting notches on the inside of the rotisserie.

(Please note that it is recommended to do 1 rack of bbq ribs in rotisserie oven when using the Ronco Rotisserie Compact oven and 1 or more racks when applying Standard and larger.)

The “potato diet” and recipes for baby potatoes?

So I read that there is apparently a weight loss diet, which is opposite to the low-carb one, where you pretty much live on potatoes. The idea behind it is that potatoes fill you up quicker…at lower calories. Has anybody heard of/tried this diet, and is it effective?

Also, what are some good ways to cook baby potatoes (so I can incorporate some parts of this diet into my life) so that microwave/boil/bake will produce some flavour? I don’t want to add much/any oil to it.

Thanks

ANY diet where you live mostly on one type of food is bad for you. Fresh veggies, lean protein and exercise works wonders.
A small drizzle of olive oil over the potatoes, a little bit of rosemary, parsley, salt and pepper. Roast at 375 for 30-40 minutes. Yum!
