Crock Pot Cooking is Perfect For Soup

If you think that you are too busy to make homemade soup, think again! With your handy crock pot, cooking tasty homemade soup is a breeze. Just about any type of soup can be adapted to the crock pot, so you can come home after a long day to a nice warm bowl of soup. Add some crusty bread and you are all set for a relaxing evening at home.

Soup for the Crock Pot Cook

There is nothing as satisfying as ladling a warming soup into your bowl. When you use your crock pot, you can easily make soup from fresh or pre-packaged ingredients. Canned broth or creamed condensed soups make an easy base if you do not want to make one from scratch. Add vegetables, noodles, rice, or any other favorite ingredient and let it simmer all day long on low. Even if you are feeling under the weather, it only takes a few moments to throw some ingredients together and plug in the crock pot. Later in the day, you will have a wonderful, nutritious soup to soothe your throat and make you feel better.

What Kind of Soups Can You Make in a Crock Pot?

Add some stock or broth and your favorite vegetables before you leave for work. When you get home, add some noodles and let it cook for about half an hour. Before you know it, you have some lovely chicken noodle soup or beef noodle soup all ready for dinner. If you prefer dumplings, add them instead of the noodles for a filling meal. If you have leftover ham, you can easily make a tasty bean or split pea soup for a cold winter night. For bean soup, it does take a little planning, since the beans must be soaked overnight before adding them to your soup.

Chowders are perfect for the crock pot. Since they are usually milk based, scorching is a concern when making seafood chowders from scratch on the stove. In the crock pot, add your ingredients and set the pot on low. When you come home, you’ll have the best tasting clam or seafood chowder you’ve ever tasted, perfectly prepared every time. Just drop in the oyster crackers before you serve each bowl.

Just about any combination of ingredients can be thrown into the crock pot to make soup. If you have some kielbasa in the refrigerator, make some soup! Sausage, hamburger, potatoes, broccoli… they can all be used to make soup in the crock pot. If you prefer vegetarian fare, pumpkin soup is easy to make with pumpkin or squash, parsnips, apples, potatoes and some seasonings. Just puree it at the end of cooking with a stick mixer and you will have a tasty bowl of goodness to warm you through and through.

Crock pots are also an excellent choice for stews of all kinds especially when using cuts of meat that may be not quite so tender for budget reasons. This is not so much a problem in a crock pot or slow cooker as the process naturally tenderizes the meat and makes for a very flavorful stew. All you need to do is cut up into bite sized pieces some meat and sear it in a pan and add to this some sautéed mushrooms, onions and some of your favorite vegetables in bite size pieces, cover in liquid (wine works nice), season, and let cook on low all day. At the end add a roux to this to thicken the sauce and you have a wonderful hunter’s stew.

Why Put Together a Collection of Amish Recipes

Over ten years ago I married my wife and moved into Amish country.  My wife had a lot of contact with the Amish in Ohio.  We had a lot of great times in the Amish homes.  There we long talks, game playing, and the fantastic food.  I was able to enjoy many different Amish cooked meals.  I have been able to collect a lot of those recipes which Amish use.  I now want to spread what I have learned about what makes Amish cooking so appealing and how to make that great food.

There are a few things that I have learned about Amish cooking.  Amish style cooking is a melting pot of many different cultures.  The strongest cooking influences come from German and Swiss cultures.  This doesn’t mean the recipes come from there, but a lot of recipes that come from many other cultures.  This makes it’s a great possibility that Amish cooking is borrowed from your culture also.  No wonder so many people feel at home when they have Amish style cooking.

The search for a great meal starts with the ingredients.  We are going to start with the meat.  I don’t want to break your heart, but not all Amish take care of their animals.  This can really affect the taste of the meat.  If you can, go to the country and see how the farmers are actually taking care of the animals.  This doesn’t mean just the Amish, but whoever is raising the animals.  You might not have Amish farmers who live nearby, so you really need to expand your search to all farmers.  You might not be able to get to a farm to buy meat.   You just need to keep trying different stores to buy meat.  You might want to even place an ad in a paper that farmers might want to read.  The taste is so important in your cooking.  Bad tasting meat will make your dish taste bad not matter what you add to it.

The produce you put into your food follows the same rules.    If it tastes bad, it will make your dish taste bad also.  All you have to do is search out for great tasting produce no matter where you can find it…  Do not be afraid to go and search out for great tasting produce that won’t break the bank.  Try going to farmers market, road side stands, or join a farmer’s coop.   I actually buy a lot of produce from the discount grocery where the selection is great, and the prices are lower.

The spices are the next place to consider when cooking Amish style.  The most expensive is not always necessarily the best.  Just try different ones, until you get what you like.  Just remember to keep it simple and not go to exotic.  The Amish tend to live a simpler life style, and this reflects in their cooking.

There are quite a few reasons that I am putting the recipes on the internet.  First of all, the recipes are usually pretty easy to cook, and ingredients are easy to find.  In addition to the easiness of cooking, the recipes tend to be easy on your budget.  This is extremely important in today’s economy.  The biggest benefit of Amish Cooking is that the Amish really love their food and that passes on to everyone.  That is why I am passing on those my knowledge what helps recipes and recipes that Amish use.  That is so you can also have great experiences o the fantastic food Amish has.  One place to start your search for Amish recipes is at http://www.amish-recipe.blogspot.com   You can also do a search for Amish recipes.  More and more people are putting the recipes into books and placing them on the internet.

Mace being used as a cooking ingredient back in the day?

My dad got some ancient, handwritten German recipes written by my Great-grandmother when my Grandma passed away. There was a recipe for a spice cake, and one of the ingredients is mace!!! Did she mean the stuff ladies carry around and spray jerks with now? Or was it something entirely different?

Mace is a spice. They are not talking about the spray you would use in self defense.

From wisegeek:

Mace is a spice made from the waxy red covering which covers nutmeg seeds. The flavor is similar to that of nutmeg, with a hint of pepper and a more subtle note which can be overwhelmed by heavy-handed cooks. Mace is readily available in many cooking supply stores in both whole and ground form, and it has a wide range of uses from desserts to savory roast meats. The versatile flavor can make mace a useful spice to have around, especially since many recipes call for it.

Kielbasa

Kielbasa

$71.7

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Kielbasa, Kovbasa, Kolbasa, and Kubasa are common North American anglicizations for a type of Eastern European sausage. Synonyms include Polish sausage, Ukrainian sausage, etc. In English, these words refer to a particular genre of sausage, common to all Eastern European countries but with substantial regional variations. In the Slavic languages, these are the generic words for all types of sausage, local or foreign. The terms entered English simultaneously from different sources, which accounts for the different spellings. Usage varies between cultural groups, but overall there is a distinction between American and Canadian usage. In the United States, the form kielbasa is more often used and comes from the Polish kie basa sausage, perhaps a derivation from the Turkic kul basti grilled cutlet.
