I purchased this basically for cooking casseroles and slowly simmeringsoups. but I was delighted to find that it was suitable for several other types of food and methods of cooking.

The Dutch oven measures 18.9 x 15.1 x7.1 and weighs approx 11lbs. It is oven safe up to 450 degrees.

The 2 loop handles are made of stainless steel and I find them to be very stable and safe to use. They made the Calphalon Dutch Oven very easy to lift especially when full.

Not only casseroles and soups, I now use it for chilli, pasta and it cooks pot roasts superbly in the oven.

It has a hard anodized exterior with a very useful and accurate non stick interior.

The lids are made of stainless steel with glass lids which enable you to see whether your dishes are simmering or boiling as your recipe requires.

Should you be cooling the dishes like pasta in sauce or casserole steak with gravy, I found it holds a substantial amount of liquid. This suits my family as we do not like dry meals.

Again with the dish full of sauce I found the 2 handles made the oven very safe and stable to carry from oven to table.

I have a grill pan question..?

-I just bought a calphalon grill pan from Macy’s and it is inon-stick.
- I have a nice 1 inch thick steak without a bone in my freezer.
I would like to know
-how do i grill it?
-I have electric range, is that an obstacle?
-How is a grill pan different than a frying pan? I think that I just wasted my money on the grill pan.
I live in NJ and wanted to grill a steak so bad . The weather is terrible that is why I made that impulse decision to buy the grill pan..
Help me! I am stuck with this pan now..What else can I cook in it?

I cook a lot of things in my grill pan – chicken, burgers, hot dogs, veggies, pretty much everything you can throw on an outdoor grill. The flavor won’t be exactly the same, but it’s better than nothing. (Nothing beats the flavor of charcoal, IMO, but I’m not going to go freeze my cookies off in my NY yard to grill anything.)

I also have an electric range. You just want to use the biggest burner. Put the pan on medium heat for about 15-17 minutes or so before you throw anything on it – preheating the pan gets you the good grill marks. Do not put it on high heat because the nonstick coating gives off fumes at too high a temperature. The grill lines on the pan keep whatever you’re cooking out of it’s own fat – that’s the difference from a frying pan.

When you put the steak on the grill, make sure the surface is dry – if you marinate anything, pat it down with paper towels so you get grilled food, not steamed food. Since I will only eat a steak super rare (as in I answer the question “How do you want that cooked?” with the word “Barely.”) I put a 3/4 inch thick steak on for 90seconds to 2 minutes a side. Adjust the time to your tastes. Most of it’s just trial and error – better to undercook it at first and then put it back, because you can’t undo an overcooked steak.
