How to Save on Meats, Seafood and Poultry at the Grocery Store

All of us feel the pinch on our wallets due to the poor economy, so we are all looking for ways to save. One way for us to trim costs is to watch how much money we spend at the supermarkets. Most of us shop the sales and use coupons, but it can be quite challenging to do that for each and every item in our carts, in particular; meats, seafood and poultry. But there are a few tips on how you can save on these food items.

Manager's Specials

Often during the week, manager's offer random specials on various cuts of beef, poultry and fish. Before purchasing what is on sale, scour these sections to see if there are any additional specials that were not in the ad. Once, I was shopping during the middle of the week and bought 5 pounds of ground turkey at $0.99 a pound. This was such a great deal, that I ended up buying 15 pounds and froze most of it for future use.

As meats, poultry and other frozen items near their expiration date, the manager will substantially discount these items. They would rather make some money on the products rather than nothing, as they would need to be disposed of if they were not purchased. If you do purchase meats and poultry nearing their expiration date, use or freeze them right away. This is a great way to save on meats, seafood and poultry at the grocery store.

Bulk Packaging

At some grocery stores, it is cheaper to buy beef, poultry and or seafood at a lower price per pound if you decide to buy it in bulk. Most people enjoy the convenience of buying what they need in smaller packages. However, if you tend to cook boneless skinless chicken breasts quite often, it may be sensible to buy it bulk and this will save you money in the long run.

Manufacture and Store Coupons

You may not think that you can use coupons to purchase beef, poultry and or seafood, but it is really true and you can! Many brand names of both beef and chicken are getting in on the coupon action and want consumers to purchase their products, so they release coupons in hopes that people will try their product. From chicken sausage to pork loins, check online, your local newspapers and magazines for manufacture coupons for discounts on these products.

Individual stores often offer store coupons and these coupons are for savings on various items, some of wish may include discounts on beef, poultry and seafood. I often visit this one supermarket as they seem to have the best deal on frozen medium shrimp. Usually the price is $11.99 for two pounds, but they always seem to have a store coupon for an additional $5.00 off, which is a fabulous deal! At the same store, tilapia and flounder go as low as $2.99 a pound with a store coupon. Be on the look out for these bonus coupons as they will save you money on your poultry, beef and seafood purchases.
