Cooking Squash: How to Cook Butternut Squash
The meat of the pumpkin is a deep, bright orange with a dense texture meets once cooked and taste like a sweet potato. Along with its other virtues – reasonable price, good availability, durability, and versatility – is also an excellent source of beta-carotene, potassium and vitamin C. Packed with high fiber and low in fat and sodium, squash are also ideal for heart health, anti-cancer and weight loss diets. Butternut squash is one of the varieties of winter squash that butternut, acorn, Hubbard and spaghetti squash contains. Choosing and Storing Butternut Squash
When searching for pumpkins at the grocery, look for one with a long “Neck” and a relatively small base. The neck portion has firm flesh without seeds, making it easy to cut. The lower end contains the seed cavity and is surrounded by meat, which is softer in texture with significant strings. The surface must be dry, uniformly hard and free from Japan, mold, or soft spots. Choose specimens that seem too heavy for their size. Pumpkin needs careful handling, despite their tough appearance, because they will bruise if handled roughly.
Storage pumpkin can be stored in a cool, dry place with good air circulation. If conditions are good, they can continue throughout the winter. About 55 degrees is ideal, but colder temperatures are not advised. The soft, moist flesh surrounding the seed box will deteriorate in the past. If that area is mushy, you have saved your squash is too long. However, the “neck” area will often be stable and usable.
Butternut Squash Preparation
One of the few drawbacks of squash is that it can be difficult to peel. To this rather tedious step, some markets now stock pre-peeled pumpkin chunks. This saves a lot on preparation, but you pay for convenience. The inspection of the package, look for a clean, damp surfaces. Replace the pumpkin by soaking in cold water, even if it has a prewash.
To peel a whole squash, cut a thin slice from both the top and bottom, so the upright stand. Halved, where the neck meets the rounded bottom so you can easily peel a cylinder, plus the rounded tip. Use a standard vegetable peeler or a knife to the external shell peel. Remove the seeds and stringy portions. Cut into uniform size pieces. Alternatively, some recipes call for cooked pumpkin to it with the skin. Once cooked, it is easy to just pull the flesh away from the hard shell-like skin or scoop out the flesh.
To Cook Butternut Squash
There are several ways to cook a pumpkin, but I’ve found that roasting in an oven is both the easiest way and delivers the best taste. Cut the squash lengthwise and remove the middle the seeds. Place the squash on a greased baking dish. Sprinkle cut sides with salt and pepper. Dot with margarine or butter. Bake cut side up, so you do the steaming and delicious nutty loses taste for about 45 minutes at 375 degrees or until tender.
After cooling, fried pumpkin is a cinch to peel and can be used in any recipe that calls that cooked pumpkin. Spoon the meat and mash or puree in a food processor or blender. You can also freeze or refrigerate leftovers for another occasion.

Traditionally used for soups and flavored breads, they are also perfect for cakes and pies, salads, fabulous side dishes, and as a valuable ingredient in curries and soufflés as rice, pasta, and couscous dishes. Does anyone know how long cook a spaghetti squash?
Hi, I’m cooking spaghetti squash for the first time and I have no idea how long to cook in the oven. I have called both my grandmother and mother and she said it 350 degrees in the oven, but neither could remember how long … They both told me I would know because it was next to skin, but I do not want to check every 5 minutes to see if it’s ready. On average 4 to 8 pounds, the cylindrical spaghetti squash is generally available year-round with a peak season from early fall through through winter. While a true spaghetti squash is pale ivory to pale yellow in color, in the early 1990′s, an orange spaghetti squash, known as “Orangetti” was developed and this is often found in supermarkets today. Higher in beta carotene, the orange variety is also bit sweeter than the lighter counterpart, although both have a mild taste that is easily reinforced by the food served with or on. A Dieter’s Dream, a four-ounce serving of spaghetti squash has only 37 calories. Buy & Storage When buying spaghetti squash, look for hard fruit that is heavy for its size, about eight to nine inches in length and four to five inches in diameter and with a pale even color. Avoid any squash with soft spots and green color is a sign of immaturity. The average four pounds spaghetti squash will yield about five cups. Spaghetti squash can be stored at room temperature for about a month. After cutting, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate up to 2 days. Spaghetti Pumpkin freezes well. Pack cooked pumpkin in freezer bags, seal, label and freeze. Partially thaw before re then, steam until tender but still firm, about 5 minutes. How To Cook Spaghetti Squash Bake It – Pierce the whole shell several times with a large fork or skewer and place in baking dish. Cook squash in preheated 375 ° F oven about 1 hour or until meat is tender. Boil It – Heat a pot of water large enough for the whole squash to keep. When the water boils, drop the pumpkin and cook for 20 to 30 minutes depending on its size. When a fork goes easily into the flesh, the squash done. The microwave – Cut squash in half lengthwise, remove seeds. Place squash cut sides in a bowl with microwave 1 / 4 cup water. Cover with plastic wrap and cook on high for 10 to 12 minutes depending on the size of the pumpkin. Add more cooking, if necessary. Let stand covered for 5 minutes. With fork “comb” out the strands.
